What Is The Best Video Camera Package For Your Church?

If you’re looking to invest in a video camera package for your church, there are a few things to consider.

In the last five years or so, low-priced video cameras have been flooding the market from all corners of the world. They offer a wonderful alternative to hiring a professional videographer and can save thousands of dollars when used correctly in conjunction with some key accessories. However, I don’t recommend going out and buying a $300 video camera thinking it will function at the same level as my $4000 Sony EX-3.

They’re not even close on many levels due to lenses, sensors, and overall construction quality. The bottom line is that if you buy an inexpensive camera kit along with some high-dollar accessories such as matte boxes, follow focus, and shoulder rigs, you could easily spend $4000-$5000.

I already know many of you are doing just that. I get at least one email per week asking me what the best camera package is for under $2000 or even $1000. Let’s set the record straight here once and for all by listing out some cameras along with their native lenses (NOT INCLUDED), film size sensors, price range ($300-500), and overall rating (on a scale of 1-10) in no particular order:

Canon T3i (600D) with standard 18-55mm lens: $775 (list price), APS-C Sensor, 7 out of 10

Canon XHA1s: $1700 (body only), Super 35mm Sensor, 8.5 out of 10

Panasonic GH2 with 14mm pancake lens: $1225 (body only), Micro Four Thirds, 8 out of 10

Panasonic HMC150 with standard lens: $1350 (body only), 1/3″ CCD Sensor, 5.5 out of 10

Blackmagic Pocket Camera with standard lens: $995 (body only); Super 16mm Sensor, 8.5 out of 10

Blackmagic Production Camera with standard lens: $2995 (body only), 2/3″ Sensor 13 out of 10

As you can see, there is a huge price disparity here. In fact, the lowest priced camera I list here still costs more than your average video camcorder! Also, keep in mind that you will need to buy a memory card, battery, charger, LCD viewfinder (if your camera doesn’t have one built-in), shoulder rig with follow focus, matte box, lenses for each camera (which often cost more than the cameras themselves), media cards or hard drives to store footage on, rigs for rigging on booms and mounts (which can cost more than the cameras), and finally, someone to actually shoot the footage. It’s not quite as simple as just buying a camera off the shelf at Best Buy, but it still doesn’t mean that you need to spend thousands of dollars either.

Considerations When Buying Church Video Camera Packages

When purchasing a church video camera package, there are some key considerations that you must take into account. These considerations will help you to get the best value and overall performance from your new system. The following is a list of several important things that should be taken into consideration:

– Size and Weight: A church videography package can consist of multiple components. As such, you want to make sure that the system is well balanced and easily moved when in use. You can accomplish this by buying a camera package that is lightweight and not too large.

– Picture Resolution: The picture resolution of any production system will determine how good the image looks on screen. It’s important for a videographer to know that the more pixels a camera has, the higher resolution picture it will produce.

– Audio Recording: In order for a church video to be successful, you must have good audio recording capabilities. Make sure that any system you purchase comes with an external microphone input and high-quality built-in microphones.

– Connectivity: The digital age is here and God’s House needs to catch up in order to remain pertinent. That being said, a church video camera system should have multiple ways for you to connect it to your church’s television sets and other devices. Some of the most common connection methods are HDMI, component cables, RCA cables, and 3.5mm audio cables.

– Remote Controls: It’s important for any church camera operator to be able to control the system without standing directly in front of it. This will allow them to move around the room freely and produce a video with fewer disruptions. As such, you should make sure that your new system comes with wireless remote controls.

– Camera Lenses: Church videography systems are often composed of multiple components. However, all of these components will need to work together in order for the cameras to capture the best image possible. As such, you want to make sure that your system comes with lenses that are compatible with each other and produce high clarity images.

– Tripods: Since it’s important for a camera operator to be able to move around freely when shooting video content, purchasing a tripod is essential. The tripod should come with adjustable height settings so that it can accommodate different-sized people and provide added stability during use.

– Hard Drive Capacity: Today’s modern digital age has made file size increasingly larger than ever before. As such, you want to make sure that any church videography package you purchase is equipped with an external hard drive that can handle all of your footage.

– Ease of Use: When using a church video camera system, you want to make sure that it’s easy to use and doesn’t require an extensive learning curve before you can get it up and running. As such, purchase systems with high user ratings in order to avoid frustration when producing content for your church.
